We have already bought the lighting system that interests us, because we are clear about the ecosystem that we have at home and in which we are going to integrate it. It is time to configure it, a process that except for specific cases, is quite simple to carry out and in which, we will have our mobile or tablet, as an inseparable companion of fatigue . For testing we have used a TP-Link bulb .

In the box and in the instructions of the bulb, LED strip, lamp, flexo … that we have bought, as a general rule, a QR code will come that offers us, through camera, access to the proprietary application necessary to configure our system of illumination. We must download it from the Google Play Store or the App Store and in parallel, verify that we have Google Home, HomeKit or Alexa installed, depending on the system that we are going to use. Both the proprietary app and that of the home ecosystem, we will need it yes or yes.

The first step begins by configuring the proprietary application and there are no valid instructions here, since each manufacturer is different and offers a different interface and way of proceeding. However, all applications have a guide that we must follow step by step, to add the device in question and it is usually something really simple. It is the first step before adding the device to the relevant ecosystem .

We will use an LED bulb as an example, in this case from the TP-Link brand, something that we have already discussed. The app that we are going to use is Kasa Smart , which can be downloaded on iOS and Android .

The application guides us step by step and first asks us to select the type of device we want to add . In this case the choice was a smart light. It is a step that changes from one app to another, although it does not offer too many differences in substance.

The application guides us step by step and now a reminder arrives to warn us that we have the Wi-Fi connection and location services activated. One point before choosing what type of smart light we are going to use . Different types of bulbs, lamps, LED strips … each one chooses the one that is convenient.

Now, in the case of the Kasa app, a warning arrives: it is necessary to have the bulb in a lamp with the switch on and the thread tightened. Otherwise the process cannot continue.

It is the previous step before you ask us to connect the mobile to the Wi-Fi of the bulb in the phone settings and once connected, the next step is to add the bulb (or device) to the Wi-Fi network at home and eye, because it must be in the 2.4 GHz band , since they do not usually work in the 5 GHz band. Once linked, it will ask us to enter the key of our Wi-Fi, to which the bulb is going to connect.

Once “hooked” to the network, the app verifies if there is a pending firmware update to download it. The process takes very little time and once updated (if necessary), we can only customize the name and, if necessary, the icon to identify it.

The first step has already been taken and we have added the device in question to the corresponding application . Now it remains to do the same with the application of the ecosystem in which we are going to integrate the lighting system.

Set up Alexa, Google Assistant, or HomeKit


On this occasion, the used bulb is compatible with Alexa and Google Home , so we are going to develop the process to connect it in both cases. Always, it is necessary to have previously configured the proprietary application, in this case Kasa from TP-Link.

In the case of the configuration with Alexa and Google Home, it is a simpler process by having the light bulb already added to the Kasa app.



Now it’s time to open the Alexa application and on the initial screen we will see a section in the left area of ​​the screen , a drop-down panel.


Among all the options that we will see appears one that gives us access to the “Skills” . It is the tool that we must download, a kind of integrated mini application that corresponds to the brand of the device we want to add, in this case TP-Link Kasa. Each brand and each device has a specific skill.

Once downloaded and installed, we will see in the central part a configuration button that opens the way to a new screen with a section under the legend “Manage digital home devices” . Click on it to change the screen.

Now we will see in the upper right area a “+” symbol on which we will click. A menu opens with several options from which we will choose “Add device” .

The same process can be carried out by pressing at the bottom of the screen, on the last of the five shortcuts, the one on the left. In the form of a house with switches, it is the one that we must press to add the device , in this case the light bulb.

We can add it by type or, as in this case, since the brand appears in the upper area of ​​the screen, save those steps by pressing directly on Kasa (or Philips, Netatmo, Amazon …) for the occasion, and since the brand already appears in the top bar, I have used the TP-Link app, Kasa. If we do it manually, we must scan the environment ourselves to find the model we want to add. In this way, it is the app itself that is responsible for searching, in this case, the light bulb.

The process may take a few seconds and when it “finds” it on the network, it adds it to the list of available devices . From there, step by step, we have to configure the device and among the options, the one that offers to add it to a group.

In this case, since I have no more lights available, I have skipped that step. There are also some optional settings , such as the one that allows you to set the room in which we are going to use it to complete the configuration.


To check that we have concluded the process, we will click on “lights” and we will see how, in this case, our light bulb is already added. And seeing the settings in Alexa, now it’s time to repeat the steps in the Google ecosystem.


For this, it is necessary to have the Google Home application installed on our device, something possible both in the Android ecosystem, where it is pre-installed, and in iOS, since it can be downloaded from the App Store

To integrate our connected luminaire, we open the Google Home application and look at the “+” symbol in the upper left area. We must click on it to access the screen and use the “Configure device” option . A panel opens and we choose the lower option “Have you configured a device?” . We choose this one, since the bulb, LED, whatever luminaire, is already registered in the corresponding app.

Google Home is responsible for automatically detecting any connected device that is likely to be added in a process that does not take more than a few seconds. We just have to follow the steps on the screen and press next after choosing the section to add.

The bulb is added and it only remains to choose the location data such as the address, the room in which it will be located. Although I marked office, then I changed it to study, hence the disagreement. However, if on the main screen we click on the connected device, we can access and change all the settings .

 Routines and scenarios


One of the advantages offered by this type of connected lights is that we can establish routines, scenarios, schedules . It is about creating schedules so that depending on different variables that can be time, temperature, hours, presence … always according to the capabilities of the device, these can change its operation.

In this sense, if for example, at 10 o’clock at night we sit in front of the television, we can program all the lights in the house so that they lower the intensity of the light , that they change the color tone or, if we have more devices connected, turn on the home theater or turn on the TV’s LED lighting system.

But since our LED test bulb is sad and lonely, programming will be straightforward. We are going to create a program so that it is enough to say “Cinema time” to the speaker, so that the light goes out. Something possible with Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa .

In the case of Google Home, we return to the application and click on “Routines” to access the “Management of routines” . In the lower right area, a “+” symbol in a blue circle leads us to the configuration menu in case of looking for a routine other than those proposed and already predefined.

We must add the command that will “activate our routine” when we give the order to the smart speaker or phone and then we will establish the action. And although in this case, I have only added one action to develop, you can chain all the ones you want and combine with other connected devices to create scenarios.

And now, we are going to see the same steps with Alexa , since the Amazon assistant also allows the creation of routines and automations. We can set hours, voice commands, interactions with other devices … and the first step is to access the Alexa app.

In the left side area we access a panel by pressing the menu of the three horizontal stripes and click on “Routines” . It is the gateway to our programming.

“+” button in the upper right corner of the screen invites us to create a routine if we do not want to use any of the predefined ones and in that case we will see how three options open: add the name, when the routine will be carried out and the action to be carried out . The name is the only simple step and I have named it “Cinema” for the occasion.

In the “When” section we can use voice commands, time programming, interaction with other devices … quite a few options and possible configurations. I have programmed 10 at night so that the scene skips and repeats itself on weekends automatically.

The action to be developed allows a world of options and it is best to see the screenshot to understand the breadth of possibilities . I have chosen to configure a device, the lights and among them the only one connected, the lamp. The goal is that every weekend at 10pm it will be at 11% brightness automatically. But there is still more.

And it is that we can also activate a voice command, that for example when saying “Cinema”, the luminosity drops to the 11% that we have established . As in the case of Google Home, the options are enormous and the limit is in the imagination … and in the number of connected devices.
