Bia and Rafa always wanted an apartment that looked like a home, “looking like people live in”, she says. Together, they rented an apartment in Sorocaba and transformed the 74m² with great simplicity, low investment and a decoration full of objects full of stories for both of them. Follow:
Residence type: apartment
Area: 74 m²
City: Sorocaba, Sao Paulo
Residents: Bia and Rafa live in the apartment – both are photographers and love to decorate with stories and memories of happy moments. The couple also have a one-and-a-half-year-old kitten named Bombom.
Differential: Bia says she always liked Brazilian houses, but, in the end, admits that her space ended up becoming a more cosmopolitan place, “everything here came from different places in the world. So there are many references, I always try to mix coziness, delicacy, with a tropical and cheerful touch. Our decor has memory as its essence.” For her, the biggest difference is the location: “the apartment is in one of the first neighborhoods of the city and has a strong Spanish influence due to immigration.” She also highlights that she grew up in the same neighborhood and, therefore, has a very affective relationship with the streets, houses and shops.
Bia and Rafa’s apartment: a decoration full of stories
The couple’s work is a striking presence in the decoration, as well as the things they love most in this life. Bia says that “there are cameras all over the house, photos, things that belonged to someone in my family […], a zebra mask that we brought from South Africa, shells that we collected on a beach in Cape Town. Anyway… a lot!” And she adds: “I think this is how we manage to reflect the personality in the decoration, with objects that recall the stories we live. Enough of boxing everything up, let’s decorate!”
Simple and cheerful decor
Bia says: “as the apartment is rented, we didn’t make big investments.” In the kitchen, a simple blue paint makes all the difference.
Cabinet in the entrance hall
Next to the front door, Bia has placed a coat rack that helps organize bags, hats and other items. A simple, cheap idea that brings a lot of practicality to arrivals and departures.
Practical and economical solutions
Another practical and economical solution in the apartment is the shelves that store kitchen items, food and plants. Highlight for the delicate pink fruit bowl.
Objects from family members and full of memories are all over the apartment and bring a lot of personality to the decoration. Bia tells the origins of some of them: “[…] like my grandparents’ old phone along with a license plate that Rafa brought from a small shop on an inhospitable road in the American Northwest.”
And many memories
Cheerful, colorful and unusual items are also part of the decor. In every corner, Bia and Rafa are exhibiting their photographs and objects acquired on trips.
the essence of the house
The wicker bookcase is Bia’s favorite: “it was super cheap and it’s the piece of furniture I love the most and I think it captures the essence of the house.”
A bookshelf full of memories
On the shelf, the couple keeps a little bit of everything – they have photographs, cameras, books, souvenirs and family heirlooms, such as the trumpet that belonged to Bia’s grandfather.
Among the plants that Bia grows in her apartment is a sweet potato. In the photo, she displays the cultivation in a small mug.
Simple and cozy room
In the living room, the decor exudes simplicity and warmth, and Bombom takes the opportunity to rest on the sofa. A small piece of furniture next to the upholstery stores other souvenirs and plants.
music in the decoration
Music is also part of the routine, and the record player packs delicious moments in the house.
an arrangement of shells
Shells that Bia and Rafa brought from Cape Town yield a subtle and delicate arrangement.
a serene room
The diagonal painting on the wall doubles as a headboard, and the light tone brings serenity to the space.
Touch of colors and delicacies
Cushions collaborate with colors and life for the environment. A string with moon phases decorates the wall.
A creative workspace
Bia and Rafa saved money on decoration and furniture: “as the apartment is rented, even if we wanted to, it would still make sense to invest in more expensive products for now”. They say that the office desk is a door on two easels. It is in this space that Bia spends most of her day working on the selection and editing of photos.
“The office wall, which is, without a doubt, the most beautiful in the house, I made it myself. I did the drawing with pencils and then I painted part by part”, says Bia. And she says: “we like to take risks, it has worked, thankfully.”
In the photo, Bia displays the wooden horse she took from her uncle’s garage. She also says that for them the apartment is perfect. “As we live close to the avenue, we have the feeling of being in a very lively and urban place, which I love, but as we are on the ninth floor, we also have the tranquility of being able to stay at the top, observing from afar with tranquility”. She adds: “the apartment is the perfect size for us, it’s not big or small.”
