Retro pieces stand out in apartment decor

Retro pieces stand out in apartment decor

After deciding that it was time to invest in their own home, Giorgio and Beatriz visited numerous properties until they found the ideal space. Even before moving in, the chosen location underwent minor adjustments and there are still more plans to transform the residence. Together and in constant change, the couple gradually decorates the environments, investing in new furniture and personalizing the home with their tastes, family pieces and many affective memories. Look:

Residence type: apartment

Area: 96m²

City: Sao Paulo, SP

Residents: Giorgio is an engineer and works in the area of strategic planning and market intelligence. Beatriz, on the other hand, has a degree in international relations, appreciates places with old decor and loves to spend her time making handicrafts with miniatures. They still don’t have children, but this is already in the plans and even influenced the decision to plan the apartment.

Differentials: both claim that they do not have a defined style, “it is a mixture of our tastes, hobbies and childhood memories”. In the decoration, there is the “predominance of wood and straw that in our view bring a feeling of comfort”. The couple also indicates that they have several pieces that are family heirlooms and souvenirs from different times scattered in various corners.

For Beatriz, straw furniture is special, “my grandparents had beautiful furniture with this finish, which I loved as a child”. And she adds, “to compose the decoration with these old pieces, we look for different objects that also bring us some affective memory, such as travel souvenirs. […] We always bring little treats and it’s a delight to look at them and remember that moment”.

“We really enjoy having our family and friends over,” says the couple. Therefore, next to the door, they prepared a coat rack and support for keys and accessories. “We chose to put a shelf that we already had […] and installed vintage hooks for bags”. The stool is from Bia’s mother’s house and the clogs she got from her parents during a trip to Holambra when she was still a child.

Retro and heritage furniture

The door that divided the living room and the balcony was removed, bringing integration between the environments. The sofa is the newest item in the apartment, “we opted for a light color with leather details and rounded corners to give it a more antique look”, reveals Beatriz. The Thonet rocking chair is a family heirloom.

Decoration with meaning

In the decoration, there are several items full of meaning, such as a collection of houses scattered around the apartment, lego pieces and cups with miniature scenarios made as a hobby by the resident herself. On the wall, a racket found in an antique store, “Giorgio loves to play tennis and follows the championships on TV”, says Bia.

Display of items on the coffee table

“As we have a lot of travel treats, which are usually small, we opted for a coffee table where we could expose a little of the decor on the bottom and still have the top free to place glasses or appetizers”, they explain.

The old sofa went to the balcony and set up a rest corner that they enjoy a lot. “It has a super hot sun in the morning and a cool wind at night. It’s great to relax, read a book, have a drink and that’s where Bia does her yoga classes.”

minibar at home

Beatriz and Giorgio prepare a minibar in the room. “We bought this used fridge because we love the color, it was a great find.” In addition to various drinks, the tray also won a Las Vegas-themed glass made by Bia’s hands. They inform that they have plans to build a counter, “to accommodate the minibar and wine cellar and serve as support for the barbecue”.

Freshness and beauty of plants

There are also several plants on the balcony, “we love to take care of and monitor the development, we are super excited when a new leaf is born”. Highlight for an old scale that belonged to Bia’s mother with succulents planted in the cup.

New use for old objects

Old and family objects stand out in the decoration, such as the meat grinder, which has become an elegant centerpiece.

A home full of memories

“We like to set up corners that highlight these objects, such as placing them on a tray or on top of books and also finding new functions for them. In fact, we are very attached to childhood memories and the history of these objects”, says the couple.

Travel souvenirs comics

“In the hallway of the rooms, we put comics that we put together with travel memories – museum tickets, hotel card, subway ticket, guidebooks and maps, everyone loves it, and it’s a super simple thing”. And they add excitedly, “we always come back from the trip with a bag full of these prints, already thinking about the next comic”.

Home Office

The office was not a priority on the list of house renovations, “but as Giorgio is at home, with no expected return, we wanted him to have a comfortable space to work”, says Bia. To maintain unity with the rest of the house, the couple opted for white combined with a freijó top.

Creativity in the organization

The design was made by the duo and the idea is that in addition to being a space for work and study, it is also a place to store all her handicraft material and exhibit authorial pieces and souvenirs. “Giorgio just received a typewriter that belonged to his grandfather and we are super motivated to restore it”, says Beatriz. Soon, the illustrious piece will also be part of this corner.

Little treats in the kitchen

The kitchen and laundry are also in the renovation plans. “There aren’t many cupboards or counter space for food preparation and we cook almost every day. The reform will help us a lot”, they report. To liven up the space, Beatriz decorated the wall with small treats and objects she already had.

Shelf in the laundry room

To make it easier, a shelf above the washing machine stores the products you use the most on a daily basis. Gradually, the spaces gain personality and the face of both. “The house is constantly changing. We always move something around or bring a new item, but it is precisely this possibility of change that makes decorating something very pleasant”, they conclude.

Exploring old furniture and renovating old family pieces brings meaning to the decoration and helps to transform the environments of the house in a simple and very charming way. And to play with everything in this suggestion, see vintage decor ideas .
