David Benavidez says he expects former Cuban amateur star David Morrell crawl at his feet after beating him on February 1, admitting that the “Mexican monster” “is the best” after beating him at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The prophecy of “respect”
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KO) says ALL of his opponents follow the same formula where they talk to him endlessly, saying he's a “bum,” has “no defense” and has a limited fighter. But after beating them, they sing a different tune, showering him with compliments.
What Benavidez doesn't point out is that the guys he fought throughout his long career were smaller guys, like Demetrius Andrade, Caleb Plant, David Lemieux, Anthony Dirrell and Ronald Ellis. These were Benavidez's best fights before moving up to 175 last June.
“I have nothing. I'm a tramp. I'm a RoboCop. It’s good that he thinks like that,” David Benavidez told Boxing News about David Morrell considering him a second-rate fighter. “You better have no excuses after I knocked you out in front of your own people.”
“What are you going to say?” You will say that David Benavidez is the best. Just like you and everyone I've fought with before. They say the same thing. Once they get in the ring with me, it's a whole different story. You’re going to see too,” Benavidez said.
As you can see, Benavidez, interim WBC light heavyweight champion, has created a completely unrealistic drawing in his head. The fight is more likely to go the other way, with Morrell winning and Benavidez saying afterward: “How could I be so wrong?'
The Power of Morrell
It will be interesting to see if Benavidez, 28, can come away fighting with the same style as he did at 168 when he steps into the ring with Morrell, who is a monstrous puncher with both hands.
Benavidez might not last long against Morrell fighting like he has in his last three matches, including against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. Morrell hits too hard and will drill Benavidez if he tries to overwhelm him with volume like he did against the 37-year-old Gvozdyk.
