Aidan Turner caught everyone's attention when he took off his clothes Rivals – and now he explains why he wanted Declan's body to look authentic on screen.
“He's a dad and he's a journalist so I think it would be a bit weird [to make him look too sculpted]” Turner, 41, exclusively told Us every week on his approach to these shirtless scenes. “I've often seen actors in movies or TV shows where their character's job didn't necessarily require them to be [very buff]. So you see them naked and you say, “Wait a second, I know what that takes.” I know about schedules, diets and intense physical activity. I know you don't have time for this.'
Turner didn't want fans wondering if Declan the appearance was too perfect after seeing him at his best Poldark.
“I didn’t want it to be one of those moments where it’s just a TV body. I want it to feel real,” he noted. “I tend to stay pretty fit. So the pressure was all me. And we were really lucky because we had these amazing intimacy coordinators. [for the show’s NSFW scenes].”
He continued: “Our concern is that we are vaccinated. But I think most of my peers on this show certainly aren't too bothered. We just kind of keep going. We knew what we were getting into. If you register for a Jilly Cooper show, you know what world you're entering into. Sex is one of them and if there was more, there would be more.
Based on British author Cooper novel of the same nameDisney+ and Hulu Rivals centers on a feud between two men fighting for control of a television channel in 1980s Britain. Rivals features an ensemble including Turner, David Tennant, Alex Hassell, Bella MacLean, Nafessa Williams, Katherine Parkinson, Victoria Smurfit, Emily Atack And Danny Dyer.
“It’s always nice [to hear how well-received the show and Declan is]. Any actor who says he doesn't want to hear nice things like that, I don't believe him. It's always nice to hear things like that, especially early in the release of a series,” Turner said. We about the positive reception given to the show. “I am aware of how this was received in this country [in the U.K.]which was really positive.
Now that Rivals has been renewed For season 2, Turner is excited to continue giving fans what they want.
“There’s a funny thing that happens when you’ve done a lot of work for 20 years. You land the plane on some things and on others you completely miss the airport,” he joked. “When you land the plane, you start hearing from people you haven't heard from in a while. My friends who I haven't spoken to in months just emailed me to tell me they love the show. And it's like, “Wow, this must really resonate with people.” »
Turner, who is not on social media himself but heard about the buzz, I feel very grateful for the outpouring of support, adding: “But without the social media element, it really keeps you away. But I love hearing that it's being received on a really positive level. …I guess to some extent it's always a surprise when people respond to a show and really like it.
He concluded: “As an actor, there's a lot of disappointment and some shows that you think will travel but won't – and it leaves you perplexed. I gave up years ago trying to figure out what the business wanted and what the markets were choosing. So it's so nice to hear you say these things [about the support]. It puts a real smile on my face.
Rivals is currently streaming on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ internationally.
